I was upgrading my laptop to a 1000 gig harddrive from a 250 gig
disk. I was running out of space. so it was cheaper and a little
faster for a newer drive.
I tried the official way to backup and restore the whole drive but
even the backup part didn't work from Winders. That has been my entire complaint against Ms's backp attempts.
So I decided to rebuild the whole PC, installing all the programs anew from downloaded sources.
Well, guess what? MY legal product key wasn't good enough to move to another machine. Fuck that!
LINUX HERE I COME!
So once again I have set a marker. Nine (9) years ago I decided to
try openoffice on my windows machine. I thought I'd run it until I could
not exchange documents with other employees or other people who used Microsoft Office that I
communicated with.
It never happend. I'm still exchanging docs with everyone. Bye Bye Microsoft Office.
Now in 2017, I'm trying the same thing with my operating system (OS -
that was Windows 7). My plan is to use Linux Mint. Mint is much like
Windows and I've installed every program (aka App) as I've realized it
is missing. So far nothing has been missing. Here's my list in case
you've got some special program:
LibreOffice (instead of OpenOffice)
Firefox (instead of Microcsoft Explorer (or Edge) - but I already ran Firefox and Chrome on Winders)
Thunderbird (already ran it on Winders, now runs on Linux)
Password Safe
Dropbox
VirtualBox
so you get the idea, whatever you run on Winders can be found on Linux.
I like the LInux version - Mint because it seems much closer to
Winder for the interface. You can figure it out without much trouble and it will save you
ALL the horrible issues of moving between newer computers - without
all the failures I found of trynig Windows copy/backup of your files and any copy protection crap. Look. if your backups and copying all work, tell the world on Facebook or whatever.
My copy stuff didn't work for shucks, and I'm a computer expert. Maybe that is my problem with computers, as always, your milleage may vary.
.
And if a program isn't available for Linux, there is Wine ...
My davice, go for it - you do NOT need Winders!
